An alternator is an electrical generator that converts mechanical energy to electrical energy in the form of alternating current. When it comes to your vehicle, the alternator is a pivotal piece of machinery. An alternator's construction is just the opposite of a generator. On an alternator, a magnetic field is spun inside of windings of wire called a stator to generate the electricity. Automotive alternators also produce AC and use rectifiers to convert this AC to DC.
