The hydraulic turbine-generator is designed to have lower speed, larger inertia and higher strength than steam turbine generator, so as to withstand high runaway speed. The runaway speed of medium and small-sized hydraulic turbine generator is 1.8 TO 2.2 times the rated speed. The generator should be matched with the hydraulic turbine.
In selecting the generator, the main parameters to be considered are: Capacity, voltage, speed, excitation mode and the arrangement of main shaft. In choosing the excitation mode, the quality of power supply as required by the network and the cost of construction should be carefully considered. The excitation of generators may be in the form of a DC exciter, brush-less exciter, thyristor, double winding shunt reactor, etc. Generally, larger generators use DC exciter or thyristor, while the smaller generators use brush-less excitation or double winding shunt reactor.
The insulation class of the stator and rotor of the generator is B/B or B/F. Resistance temperature detectors are embedded in the stator slots. The voltage rating of the generator at frequency of 50 Hz is 10. 5 kV or 6. 3 kV for high voltage units and 400 V for low-voltage units. But, for 60 Hz, the voltage rating is 480 V for low voltage units.
