Micro Integrated Generating Unit means assembling the turbine and the generator into a compact unit for easy installation. In some cases, the turbine, generator and the control system are connected together to form a compact unit, so that, at the site, it would only require connecting the pipe or penstock for it to generate electricity. Micro Integrated Generating Units with capacity from 0.5 kW to 100 kW are standardized for mass production. See table 5.5to5.8.
Micro Integrated Generating units are easy to install and maintain, cheap to manufacture and the market prospect is high. These units are especially suitable for the rural electrification of remote off-grid areas. So, the demand for this type of SHP technology is high in developing countries. But, looking at it from the angle of environmental protection, some developed countries are beginning to rehabilitate their abandoned SHP stations within the supply area of large grids, and trying to construct new micro power stations with low water head, which have no negative environmental impacts.
