Principle
The general principle behind membrane nitrogen generator is selective permeation. Each gas in the air has a characteristic permeation rate that is a function of its ability to dissolve and diffuse through a membrane. "fast" gases such as oxygen can be separated from "slow" gases such as nitrogen.
